Bing AI Panel Major Upgrade: Grounding Query Mapping Feature Launched, GEO Optimization Finally Has Data Leverage

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance panel has added a mapping feature from Grounding Queries to referenced pages, allowing webmasters for the first time to see the complete path of how AI search engines reference their content. What does this mean for GEO optimization?

AI Search Optimization Finally Has Trackable Data

What is the most frustrating aspect of GEO optimization? It's not knowing which of your content AI search engines are referencing and for what queries.

Now, this situation has been broken.

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance panel recently added a key feature: bidirectional mapping from Grounding Queries to referenced pages. You can click on a Grounding Query to see which pages on your site it references, and conversely, click on a page to see which Grounding Queries reference it.

Microsoft stated in an official blog post that this is a direct response to user feedback—since the AI Performance panel entered public preview in February, the most requested feature has been "let me see the connection between queries and pages."

What is a Grounding Query?

Here, a key concept needs clarification: Grounding Query is not equal to user search terms.

A Grounding Query is a query phrase automatically generated by Bing's retrieval system when constructing AI answers. When a user asks Copilot a question, the AI system breaks down the user's question into multiple Grounding Queries, then retrieves relevant content from the web index, and finally assembles it into an answer with cited sources.

This means:

  • One user question may generate multiple Grounding Queries
  • One Grounding Query can map to multiple pages on your site
  • One page may also be referenced by multiple different Grounding Queries

Understanding this mechanism is fundamental to effective GEO optimization.

What Has This Update Changed?

Before: Two Isolated Views

When the panel launched in February, you could see two types of data:

  • Which Grounding Queries are relevant to your site
  • Which pages have been referenced by AI

But these two views were disconnected. You knew a page was referenced but not for what query; you knew a query was relevant but not which page it referenced.

Now: Bidirectional Mapping

The new feature connects these two views. This seems simple but is significant—it allows you to see the complete chain of AI references for the first time:

User question → Grounding Query → Your page referenced

With this chain, you can answer key GEO optimization questions:

  • Which of my pages are most favored by AI search engines?
  • What types of questions does AI reference my content for?
  • In which directions should I strengthen content investment?

Current Limitations

It's important to recognize that this panel still has obvious shortcomings:

  1. Still in public preview, data may be incomplete
  2. No click data—you know it's referenced, but not whether users clicked the reference links
  3. Data is sampled, not a complete log of references
  4. Only covers the Bing ecosystem (Copilot, Bing AI summaries, and some partners), excluding Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.

In comparison, Google Search Console has added AI Overviews and AI Mode data to regular search reports but does not provide independent AI reference reports or page-level reference counts.

GEO Optimization Practical Guide for Foreign Trade Website Enterprises

Step 1: Open Bing Webmaster Tools and Verify Your Site

Many foreign trade enterprises only focus on Google Search Console and overlook Bing Webmaster Tools. Now, Bing provides the most detailed AI search reference data available, so there's no reason not to use it.

Verification is simple: visit bing.com/webmasters, supporting DNS verification, meta tag verification, or direct import from Google Search Console.

Step 2: Analyze Your Grounding Query Data

After entering the AI Performance panel, focus on:

  • High-frequency Grounding Queries: What topics does AI most often reference you for?
  • Important pages not referenced: Do your core product or service pages appear in the reference list?
  • Competitor analysis: Among the Grounding Queries that reference you, are there competitor keywords?

Step 3: Optimize Content to Increase Reference Rates

Based on Grounding Query data, you can optimize content targeted:

  • Deepen content depth for high-frequency Grounding Queries
  • Supplement structured data and FAQs for important pages not referenced
  • Create new content to fill content gaps exposed by Grounding Queries
  • Ensure content factual accuracy and timeliness—AI systems tend to reference reliable information sources

Step 4: Establish Regular Monitoring Mechanisms

GEO optimization is not a one-time task. It is recommended to check the AI Performance panel weekly, tracking:

  • Trends in reference volume changes
  • Newly appearing Grounding Queries
  • Changes in page reference rankings

Why is Bing Ahead of Google?

Interestingly, in terms of AI search data transparency, Microsoft Bing is ahead of Google. In February, Bing also formally wrote GEO into the Bing Webmaster Guidelines, becoming the first mainstream search engine to officially recognize the concept of "Generative Engine Optimization" in its guidelines.

This is not only a lead in product features but also official recognition of GEO as an independent optimization track.

01CodeTech Perspective

Although this upgrade to the Bing AI Performance panel seems like a "small feature," its significance is groundbreaking—this is the first time a search engine allows webmasters to systematically track and analyze AI search reference data.

For foreign trade enterprises targeting overseas markets, you should now incorporate the Bing AI Performance panel into your regular SEO/GEO monitoring system. Data-driven optimization is always more effective than blind guessing.
