Bing AI Dashboard Major Upgrade: How Grounding Query Mapping Functionality Assists GEO Optimization for Foreign Trade Websites
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance dashboard has added a mapping function from Grounding Query to pages, allowing website owners to see for the first time how AI search references their content. What does this mean for GEO optimization?

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance dashboard has received a significant update—adding a bidirectional mapping function from Grounding Query to web pages. This is the first time in the search engine field that website owners have been provided with such granular AI reference data. For foreign trade enterprises currently deploying GEO optimization, this is a tool upgrade that cannot be ignored.
What is Grounding Query?
Before understanding this update, we need to clarify a key concept: Grounding Query.
Grounding Query is not equal to the user's search query. When users ask questions in Bing's AI experiences (including Copilot, AI summaries, etc.), Bing's retrieval system generates a series of Grounding Queries to find and reference relevant web page content. These queries are internal retrieval statements of the AI, used to construct the final AI answer presented to the user.
To give a simple analogy: if a user asks "which material is best for insulated water bottles," the AI system might internally generate multiple Grounding Queries, such as "stainless steel vs glass water bottle comparison," "best insulated bottle material 2026," etc., and then extract information from matching web pages to organize the answer.
What Has Been Updated?
Bidirectional Mapping Function
The previous AI Performance dashboard displayed Grounding Queries and referenced pages as two separate views. You could see which queries involved your content and which pages were referenced, but there was no connection between the two.
The new mapping function connects them:
- Query → Page: Click on any Grounding Query to see which pages on your website are referenced by that query.
- Page → Query: Click on any page to see which Grounding Queries drive references to that page.
One Grounding Query can map to multiple pages, and one page can appear in multiple Grounding Queries.
Unchanged Parts
- The dashboard is still in public preview.
- The data is still a sample of reference activity, not a complete record.
- Still no click-through rate data—this is currently the biggest gap; you cannot know if AI references actually bring traffic.
Why Should Foreign Trade Enterprises Pay Attention to Bing?
Market Share That Cannot Be Ignored
Many foreign trade enterprises only focus on Google, but Bing has a market share that cannot be ignored in several key markets:
- U.S. Market: Bing's search share is about 8-10%, and with Copilot's AI search traffic, its actual influence is greater.
- Enterprise Users: Deep integration with Microsoft 365 means a large number of B2B buyers default to using Bing/Copilot.
- Edge Browser: The default browser for Windows systems, its natural search traffic cannot be ignored.
Official Recognition of GEO
It is particularly noteworthy that Bing has officially listed "GEO" as an official optimization category when revising its Webmaster Guidelines. This means GEO is no longer just an industry concept but an optimization direction officially recognized by the search engine.
How to Use Grounding Query Data to Optimize Foreign Trade Websites
Step 1: Register and Verify Bing Webmaster Tools
If you are not yet using Bing Webmaster Tools, now is the best time to register. Verify your foreign trade website to gain access to the AI Performance dashboard.
Step 2: Analyze Grounding Query Patterns
Check which Grounding Queries the AI system uses to reference your pages, focusing on:
- High-frequency reference queries: These are areas where your content is already recognized by AI; continue to strengthen them.
- Low-frequency but relevant queries: There is room for optimization; supplementing related content can increase the probability of references.
- Unexpected queries: Sometimes AI references your content in ways you did not anticipate, which may reveal new content opportunities.
Step 3: Optimize Page Content
Adjust content strategy based on Grounding Query data:
Enhance matching: If a particular Grounding Query frequently references your page, ensure that the page's content fully covers the related topics, increasing referenced paragraphs and depth.
Fill content gaps: If you find relevant Grounding Queries but no matching pages on your site, create targeted content to fill this gap.
Optimize structured data: Ensure that referenced pages have complete Schema.org markup to help AI better understand and extract your content.
Step 4: Compare with Google Data
It is worth noting that Google Search Console currently includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in standard performance reports but does not provide separate AI reference reports or page-level reference counts. Bing's data is actually currently the only granular analysis tool for AI references.
Comparing Bing's Grounding Query data with Google Search Console data can help you establish a more complete GEO optimization strategy.
Practical Advice Checklist
- Register for Bing Webmaster Tools today (if you haven't already).
- Check the AI Performance dashboard weekly to track trends in Grounding Queries and page references.
- Create a Grounding Query tracking table to record high-value queries and corresponding pages.
- Prioritize optimizing high-reference-frequency pages, increasing content depth and structured data.
- Use query data to guide content creation, ensuring new content precisely matches AI's retrieval logic.
01CodeTech Professional Perspective
Although this update appears to be a "small feature," its strategic significance is substantial. It is the first time website owners can see the "thought process" of AI search engines—what queries AI uses to find your content and how it associates your pages with specific queries.
For foreign trade enterprises, this is equivalent to gaining "X-ray vision" in the field of GEO optimization. While Google has not yet provided similar data, making good use of Bing's tool can give you a step ahead of competitors in GEO optimization. We recommend that all enterprises serious about overseas customer acquisition start using this tool immediately and incorporate Grounding Query analysis into their daily SEO/GEO workflows.
